Alignment Tax

The cost in raw capability or performance a model gives up in exchange for being safer and more aligned.

Definition

The alignment tax is the performance a model loses, on raw capability benchmarks or in raw helpfulness, as a side effect of making it safer, more honest, or more aligned with human intent. Techniques like RLHF or constitutional AI can make a model more cautious or more willing to refuse, which sometimes comes at the cost of being less capable on narrow benchmarks than a version trained without those constraints. Labs try to keep this tax small, since a steep one makes it tempting for teams, or competitors, to skip safety work entirely to stay ahead.
