Dual-Use

Technology that can be used for both beneficial and harmful purposes.

Definition

Dual-use describes technology that can serve both helpful and harmful ends. A model that designs medicines could in principle help design toxins; one that finds software bugs could fix them or exploit them. The dual-use nature of capable AI drives much of the debate over access, safeguards, and how openly to release models.
