Inpainting

Filling in masked or missing parts of an image so the result looks seamless.

Definition

Inpainting rebuilds missing, damaged, or marked-off parts of an image so the result looks seamless. Older methods copied nearby patterns to patch the gap, while modern ones let an image-making AI study the surrounding picture and the marked area, then generate a fill that matches its context. It is used for photo repair, removing unwanted content, and as a training exercise for text-to-image models.
